Vian: Hour 7

First of all, it would be pertinent to point out that i did actually move my blog to wordpress; but it turned out to be more hassle than it was worth! Inserting images and formatting in general was confusing my tiny brain so i thought what the heck i might as well just revert to good old blogspot.

So; Hour Seven. In some ways I have been working on this mix since the start of august (oh how time flies) and there are a few tracks (the opener for example) that have been in place for months, but I've been working in the rest of the selection slowly since then and in fact the Peter Kruder track (what a tune) was bought and inserted on the day of the mix. Just shows you how quickly you can adapt even if you have tried to consider, over time, how best to construct a mix.

I personally think this is my favourite and best mix so far. It's notable for its lack of the more organic (bongo tastic) percussive tracks that i went through a period of loving, and has more techno and tech-housy influences. It does slightly throw up an issue of identity, but frankly I think i am still too much of an amateur to worry about that quite yet.

Vian: Hour 6

Its been a while since i have successfully recorded anything approaching decent on the wheels of steel (mostly plastic) but finally i managed to put something together last week. I'm really pleased with it, the first four tracks have worked together better than any other i have played in a mix, though i didn't really anticipate that being the case at all. The vibe is very upbeat throughout and this is only compounded by the fact that the tempo is err.. bloody quick. Again this was not intentional but as the beat of 'Kings Child' doesn't come in for a good minute or so, there was no initial conception of how fast it would be, and i couldn't very well be bothered to put the track back on again from the beginning. Plus i had a little cocaine in me. I actually think it adds to the live nature of the mix which is something i wanted to achieve. It's not completely polished, and it didn't get a bout of compression from Cool Edit either, but I'm really enjoying it at the moment and it represents exactly where I am right now with regards to my output

Now, there is one feature of this mix which i would like to talk about. Overlaying 'Sunken' over the rhythmic pounding of 'Dope Slingin' Vibe' was a damn good call. Any reticence was down to my being labelled as a 'copy cat', but i just thought fuck it, it sounds so nice and ultimately - in the end - I chose the tracks so, why shouldn't I? I have been thoroughly enjoying the 2005 release 'Et In Arcadia Ego' by The Village Orchestra in recent weeks and i have thought often that a soaring, uplifting and graceful track such as 'Sunken' should be laid over a beat to drive it along and accentuate the feeling of the track. I am fully aware, of course, that Luciano (copied cat) was properly thinking along the same lines when he discovered that using M83's 'In Church' over many a percussive beat would create a magical moment in a mix and in a club atmosphere. If you hear the mix you'll probably agree having listened to my track selection that i quite like the lad, so it's no coincidence BUT its not, in - my mind anyway - out of the question that i would have thought to do it myself - first. But of course, i didn't. Ultimately i did it because it sounds great, i really love the track and it takes the mix somewhere different. You may judge for yourselves. I imagine that if i had a few forummers listen to the mix they would comment on it, an not in a positive way, Meh.

Nature Or Nurture residency!

So..  The wonderful Nurture or Nurture night, as hosted by the legend that is the Pushamann, and Sir Terry (Fancis) - as he has come to be known amongst our friends - is moving venue to the East Village in Shoreditch at the start of June, and i have been made a resident.. ! I didn't quite believe it at the time but now I can put (N.o.N) at the end of my name, yes, I am officially cool.  Anyway so the first night is next Thursday and i hope to see all you guys down there as it should be a really good evening; not only is Sir Terry and the Pushamann there but also Phonica's very own Hector.. what a corking lineup!

Huge thanks go out to Charles (Pushamann) for this, I have been exceptionally lucky to meet such a legend of a man who has been so kind as to give me this opportunity, and I hope to be able to take full advantage and put out a really good set next week... Can't wait!

That Friday Feeling..

Here is a little piece from the Oxford Mail from a nice chap (Richard Bell - thank you for your kind words and general enthusiasm) who came to checkout Housewerk..

Here is a short extract.. But i must say he has been very nice about the night, which was light on numbers (well, pretty much much dead) untill right at the end when my dear sister brought what must have been about 60 people from a house party that she had been at, and who promptly filled the dance floor for the final hour.. Thanks sis!

Well, underground House perhaps isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s why I like the spirit of this night so much; it’s something a little different.

And honestly the music is excellent – I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur (yes, really) and I have no idea what these guys were playing for the most part, but I did know that I was loving each track, and loving the fact that I was being surprised by genuinely fresh and new sounds.
So, you know, I really have no idea why tonight wasn’t more of a success.

Click here to read the full article.. And thanks again to you Richard, and indeed Adam for organising the night.. good (house)werk all round!

Vian: Hour 5

Hour 5.. its been a long time coming but I'm back playing the more goovey housey beats that haven't been seen since hour 3 way back in September! By jove that was a long time ago. Anyway, I'm very pleased with this mix, it's got some great tunes in, including the amazing Nina Simone remix on Einfach, as well as some other belters afterward.. The three tracks on the Deeependence release (of which two are in this mix) are all awesome, definitely a label to look out for in the future, this is only their second release...

I like how the mix progresses, and reaches a nice high point somewhere in the middle, but then comes back down again and ends quite deep with that Anthony Collins tune which is, as the title suggests, sensual.. aaaah. Enjoy!

tracklist:

Mark, Adru – Tribe // Deependance
Arnaud Le Texier, Emannuel Ternoise - Serendipity // Safari Electronique
Guillaume & the Coutu Dumont – Le Tigre // Oslo
Damian Schwartz – Burranto // Oslo

Unkown – Lemany // Einfach
Mark, Adru – Elephiolin // Deependance
Fabio Gianelli – Trnidad y Tobago // ThirtyOneTwenty

My next gig......

.....hopefully there will be a good crowd for it depsite the fact that it's on a Thursday night. Really looking forward to playing with the Pushamann (who was kind enough to invite me to play) and especially Terry Francis (!).. Although i am in the 'Disco Based Beats Room' I will still be playing my own brand of groovey house beats.. Apprently i may have an hour or so in both rooms, which will be great. The Russian Bar is a really cool place, so I'm told, so I hope to see you there!
